When the son of Adam wakes up in the morning -[A Serious Reminder About Restraining The Tongue]

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

The Messenger of Allaah (sallalaahu-alayhi-wasallam) said: ”When the son of Adam wakes up in the morning, all the limbs humble themselves before the tongue and say: ”Fear Allaah for our sake, (for) we are with you; if you are upright, we will be upright; and if you are crooked, we will become crooked.” [1]

The Messenger (sallal-laahu-alayhi-wasallam) also said: ”Whoever can guarantee (the chastity of) what is between his two jaw bones and what is between his two legs (i.e. his mouth, his tongue and his private parts), I guarantee Paradise for him.” [2]

Imaam Abdul-Azeez Bin Baaz (rahimahullaah) said: This requires two affairs; [a] A lot of remembrance (of Allaah); [b] keeping away from gatherings of heedlessness and doubts, and (keeping away from) that which will result in fornication and nonsense speech. [3]

Al-Hasan Bin Saaleh (rahimahullaah) said:

”I scrutinized Wara (apprehensive fear) thoroughly and did it find it more lacking in anything than the tongue.” [4]

Imaam Fudayl Ibn Iyaad (rahimahullaah) said:

”Neither hajj nor taking up positions during battle, nor Jihaad are more difficult than restraining the tongue.” [5]

Imaam Ibn Qudaamah Al-Maqdisee (rahimahullaah) said:

Know that whoever is acquainted with the worth of his era and that it is his main capital, he will not seek an understanding except in what is beneficial. This acquaintance obligates restraining one’s tongue from speaking about that which does not concern him, for indeed the one who abandons the remembrance of Allaah (The Most High) and busies himself with what does not concern him, then he is like one who is able to get hold of a gem but exchanges it for a clod of earth.  This is a loss of one’s lifespan. [6]

Our Salaf: The Night prayer-Thaabit Al-Bunaanee and Maymoon Ibn Mehraan

Thaabit Al-Bunaanee (rahimahullaah) used to pray at night and fast during the day.  He used to say: ‘’There is nothing I find more pleasing to my heart than Qiyaamul Layl (i.e. Tahajjud)’’ [Sifatus Safwah 3/262]

Maymoon Ibn Mehraan (rahimahullaah) said:

”The nobility of a Muslim is in performing the prayer in the darkness of night and not being desperate for what is in the hands of the people (i.e. their possessions) [Shu’ab Al-Imaan 3/171]

We ask Allaah to grant us the tawfeeq to follow the example of our Salaf. However, if Allaah grants you the Tawfeeq to wake up for the night prayer, do not stand up all night and then oversleep and miss fajr; rather ask Allaah for tawfeeq to wake up in the last third of the night until the beginning of Fajr.

Our Salaf: Yazeeb Ibn Thaabit

Abu khaythama narrated to us, (saying): Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn Mahdee narrated to us, (saying): Moosaa Ibn Ulayya narrated to us from his father who said: “Whenever a man asked Yazeed Ibn Thaabit about something, he said: “Is this for Allaah’s sake?” If he (the questioner) said: “yes”, he (Yazeed) would speak; and if not he would not speak.

Our Salaf: Their concern for the youth’s education in the Deen

Abu Khaythama narrated to us, (saying): Muhammad Ibn Fudayl related to us from Al-A’mash from Ismaa’eel Ibn Rajaa who said: ”We used to gather the children and narrate (hadeeth) to them.”

Our Salaf: What if they saw the fabricators and pretenders amongst the innovators of today?!

Abu khaythama narrated to us, (saying): Jareer related to us from Mansoor from Abu Ad-Duhaa from Masrooq, (who) said:”Once we were sitting with Abdullaah (Ibn Mas’ood) whilst he was reclining; then a man came to him and said: ”O Abu Abdir-Rahmaan! Verily there is a story teller at the doors of Kinda claiming that the portent of the Smoke will come along and snatch the breaths of the disbelievers (i.e. take their souls away) and the believers will get something like a cold from it.” So Abdullaah said while sitting up and he was angry, ”O people fear Allaah! Whoever amongst you has knowledge of something, then he should speak with what he knows; and whoever does not know, then he should say, ”Allaah knows best”; because it the best of knowledge for one of you to say, ”Allaah knows best” with regards to things he has no knowledge of. Indeed, Allaah (The Most High) said to His Prophet (alayhis-salaam): ”Say (O Muhammad): No wage do I ask of you for this (the Qur’aan), not am I one of the Mutakallifun (those who pretend and fabricate things which do not exist)” [Soorah Saad. Ayah: 86. English Trans. Dr Taqi-ud Din Al-Hilali and Dr Muhsin khan]

Our Salaf: They never sought the attention of the people for recognition–Alqamah

Abu Khaythama narrated to us, (saying): Mu-aawiyyah Ibn Amr related to us, (saying): Zaa-idah related to us from Al-A’mash from Maalik Ibnul Haarith from Abdur-Rahmaan Ibn Yazeed who said: It was said to Alqama: ”Why not sit in the masjid so that (the people) gather around you, ask you (questions) and we sit with you. Indeed, they ask those below you (in knowledge0” He (Abdur-Rahmaan) said: so Alqamah said: ”Indeed, I hate that (they) march behind me, saying: ”This is Alqamah; This is Alqamah.”
