Withholding from supplicating for the Muslim Rulers – Shaykh Al Fawzaan

What do you say about the one who says its not a must for him to supplicate for the (Muslim) ruler?

(You say this) because you do not love the ruler, and this is a proof of hypocrisy. The ruler of the Muslims is loved, this is the way of the believers, that they love the Muslim rulers and make dua for their success and their guidance and for them to be aided (by Allah), because their guidance is guidance for the Muslims. And if they are guided, Allah benefits the Muslims by them.

Supplicating for them is from Sincere advice, and the Religion is sincere advice to Allah, his messenger, the rulers of the muslims and the general people. (1)

And the salaf used to supplicate for the Muslim rulers upon the minbar, supplicating for their success and rectification and their guidance because this is rectification of the Muslims and a benefit for the Muslims. (2)

And this (statement) is not possible except from he who has a soul of the khawaarij, a soul of hypocrisy.
And Allah’s refuge is sought.

From the lecture:
————–
(1) The famous hadith of Tameem Ad-Daarimi (May Allah be pleased with him) as reported in Saheeh Muslim

(2) It is reported that Al-Fudayl bin Ayyad [Allah have mercy on him] said, ‘If I had one supplication that was going to be answered I would make it for the ruler (imam), for the wellbeing and righteousness of the imam means wellbeing for the land and its people.’

Al-Dhahabi, Siyar A’lam Al-Nubala` in his biography of Al-Fudayl b. Ayyad.

We ask Allah The Lord of the Tremendous Throne to rectify the affairs of our Muslim rulers, to make them from the righteous and to benefit Islaam and the Muslims by way of them. آمين

Is Supplicating for the Ruler Wrong? Shaykh Al-Fawzaan (hafidahullah)

Supplication for the Rulers of the Muslims is from the Methodology of Ahlus Sunnah wal Jamaa’ah, and abandoning it is from the methodology of the innovators.

Imam Ahmad said, “If we only had one supplication that was accepted, we would have supplicated for the ruler, because with his rectification lies the rectification of the Muslims.”

And indeed this sunnah has been abandoned to the extent that people find supplicating for the rulers strange and have bad thoughts regarding whoever does.

Fasting People Take Advantage and Supplicate to Allāh – Shaykh Uthaymīn

And when My slaves ask you (O Muhammad sallallāhu alaihi wa salam) concerning Me, then (answer them), I am indeed near (to them by My Knowledge). I respond to the invocations of the supplicant when he calls on Me (without any mediator or intercessor). So let them obey Me and believe in Me, so that they may be led aright. (Al-Baqarah: 186)

Benefits Extracted from this Verse for the Fasting Person:

Supplicating to Allāh whilst fasting is one of the times where supplications are most likely to be answered. This is because Allāh mentioned this verse within the verses of fasting. Especially since He spoke about it at the end of His speech regarding the verses of fasting.

Some of the scholars said, There is another benefit extracted from this verse: it is befitting to supplicate at the end of the fasting day, (i.e. before Maghrib, at point of opening fast).

Shaykh Uthaymīn (rahimahullāh) said,

This is one of the best times to supplicate, as the fasting person is weak and the weaker a person is, the more softer and open his heart is.  This person is more likely to turn repentantly to Allāh and to lower and submit himself to Allāh.

People cannot Bestow Blessings Upon Themselves or Others – Shaykh Fawzān

Shaykh Sālih al-Fawzān:

Allah (Subhānahu wa ta’āla) began this great sūrah (Suratul Mulk) with praise and glorification of Himself, and He is the most deserving to be praised and glorified.

The meaning of تبارك (tabāraka) is تعاظم. Allāh is the one who, when performing dhikr of him, blessings are obtained from (when done sincerely for Allāh and in accordance with the sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (sallallāhu alaihi wa salam)). He is the one who sends down blessings and He is the one who bestows blessings on whomsoever He wills.

This word ‘tabāraka’ does not apply except when speaking of Allāh, hence it is not allowed to say to someone “Oh so and so, tabārak upon us”, as some of the ignoramuses say.

However, as for saying to someone, you are “mubārak”, then there is no issue with it, because the meaning of “mubārak” is that Allāh (Subhānahu wa ta’āla) has blessed you and bestowed his blessings upon you.

Allāh (Subhānahu wa ta’āla) said:

‎وَجَعَلَنِي مُبَارَكًا أَيْنَ مَا كُنتُ

“And He has made me blessed wheresoever I be (Sūrah Maryam: 31)
and

(This is) a Book (the Qur’ān) which We have sent down to you, full of blessings (Sūrah Sād: 29).

Therefore, Allāh is the one who bestows blessings and places blessings in whoever, wherever and whatsoever he wills. As for mankind, they can not bless themselves, indeed it is only Allāh who gives mankind blessings and makes them blessed.

The Most Comprehensive of Supplications – Ash-Shaykh Al-Uthaymīn

The Most Comprehensive of Supplications – Ash-Shaykh Al-Uthaymīn

The best of supplications and most comprehensive is His statement:

وَمِنْهُم مَّن يَقُولُ رَبَّنَا آتِنَا فِي الدُّنْيَا حَسَنَةً وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ حَسَنَةً وَقِنَا عَذَابَ النَّارِ

‏And of them there are some who say: “Our Lord! Give us in this world that which is good and in the Hereafter that which is good, and save us from the torment of the Fire!” (Al-Baqarah: 201)

Thus, this is the most comprehensive of supplications because it combines between the good of the worldly life and the hereafter, and the Messenger of Allāh used to supplications with this a lot.

Therefore a person should supplicate with this supplication and likewise the other authentically reported supplications, so that by way of which he will be carrying out the sunnah from all angles (as is related to supplications).

Ask by Allah’s Face for the Ultimate Goal

Shaykh Ṣāliḥ al-Fawzān was asked:

What is the intent of the Messenger’s statement (sallallāhu alaihi wa sallam), Do not ask for anything by Allāh’s Face except Paradise?

He (ḥafidahullāh) answered:

“Yes (that is correct), glorify Allāh’s Face (azza wa jal), and do not ask for anything by it from the coveted objects of the worldly life, only ask by it for Paradise – as a glorification of Allāh’s Face (subhānahu wa ta’āla) – which is the ultimate goal.”

Way of the Prophets in Supplicating to Allah – Shaykh Shaykh Sālih Al-Fawzān

Shaykh Sālih Al-Fawzān (hafidahullāh):

It is a must that the Muslim supplicates and calls upon his Lord in every time and location. He (should) humble himself to Allāh because this is the way of the Prophets and Messengers (alayhimus salātu was salām.)

Supplicate To Allah In Times of Ease And He Will Answer In Times Of Difficulty

Abu Ad-Dardaa [radiyallaahu-anhu] said:

Supplicate to Allaah in your times of ease and He will answer your supplication in your times of difficulty.”  A man said to him, ‘’Advise me.” So he said to him, ‘’Remember Allaah in times of ease and He [The Mighty and Majestic] will remember you when you are in difficulty.”
