The Diseases of the Heart and Their Cure – Shaykh Saaleh al-Fawzaan

I am a man who is afflicted with many diseases of the heart, they include: bad thoughts of people, arrogance, and love of being heard and seen (showing off). I know that all of this is from the Shaytaan and I try to distance myself from this. However, Shaytaan lures me each time. What is your advice, O Shaykh Saaleh (Al-Fawzaan) towards this?

Answer

Allah, the Most High, has directed us with his statement:

“And if an evil whisper from Shaitan tries to turn you away (from doing good, etc.), then seek refuge in Allah. Verily, He is the All-Hearer, the All-Knower. [41:36]

So seek refuge in Allah from that.

What Are the Signs of a Responsive Heart and Unresponsive Heart? Shaykh Uthaymīn

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Shaykh Uthaymīn was asked:

What are the signs of a responsive heart? And the signs of an unresponsive heart?

Shaykh Uthaymīn:
A sign of a responsive heart, is that it humbles itself to the remembrance of Allāh.

And the sign of an unresponsive heart is that it is not affected by what it hears, from the verses of Allah.

Seek Protection from Diseases of the Body and Heart – Shaykh al-Uthaymīn

Seek Protection from Diseases of the Body and Heart – Shaykh al-Uthaymīn

Shaykh Muhammad ibn Sālih al-Uthaymīn (رحمه الله) in explanation of the Dua of Qunūt, mentions a tremendous benefit relating to diseases.

He said, that when supplicating for health and wellbeing the Muslim should bring to mind the diseases of the body and diseases of the heart (those which affect your religion). This is because diseases of the heart are more severe and harmful than the diseases of the body.

He (رحمه الله) continues to say:

The diseases of the body (and their harms) are well known, however the diseases of the heart (are often overlooked and they) are of two types:

The first disease is the Shahawāt and its origins are whims and lusts. (Meaning) a person knows the truth, however he doesn’t want to follow it due to his desires and whims being in opposition to that which the Prophet (عليه السلام) came with.

The second disease is the disease of shubuhāt (i.e. beliefs, ideas, thoughts that are made to resemble the truth but are falsehood in reality), and its origin is ignorance, because the ignoramus acts upon falsehood whilst thinking thaf it is the truth. And this is an extremely dangerous sickness.

The Shaykh continues to advise that we should supplicate to Allāh and ask that he gives us health, wellbeing and protection from (both) diseases of the body and diseases of the heart; which are the (aforementioned) doubts and desires.

Signs of a Sound Heart and a Sick Heart – Shaykh Rabī

‎إِلَّا مَنْ أَتَى اللَّهَ بِقَلْبٍ سَلِيمٍ
Except him who brings to Allāh a clean heart [clean from Shirk (polytheism) and Nifāq (hypocrisy)]. Ash-Shu’ara:89

Shaykh Rabī ibn Hādi Al-Madkhalī (hafidahullāh):

Ponder, is your heart sound?

What is the sound heart?

The sound heart is that which fights Shirk and rejects falsehood, it accepts the truth and refutes falsehood with all its might, this is the sound heart. So, if you notice that you accept the truth from whoever brings it to you (you accept the truth; the truth guides you and your goal is the truth) then by Allāh your heart and intellect is sound.

What is the sick heart?

And, if you realise that you reject the truth when it comes to you from a certain direction, and you accept falsehood when it comes from another direction and you behave as if it is the truth; then know that your heart is sick.
