What Are Examples of a Calamity in a Person’s Religion – Shaykh Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami

Ash-Shaykh Al-Allaamah Muhammad Amaan Al-Jaami [may Allah have mercy upon him] was asked about calamities in a person’s religion, he responded,

“We ask Allah [the Most High] that He does not put us to trial in our religion. A calamity in religion is like what the atheists, the orientalists, the ba’athists, Marxists have been afflicted with and all other heretics (besides the ones mentioned). Whoever is put to trial in his Aqeedah with deviation, and put to trial in his worship with Bidah, then indeed he has been put to trial with calamities in his religion. These are (some) types of calamities in a person’s religion which (a person) must – at all times – seek refuge from, because you will be rewarded – if you were patient – when facing a calamity in worldly affairs, whereas a calamity in religion is a more severe calamity”. (1)

Shuraih Al-Qaadhiy [may Allah have mery upon him] said, “Indeed (when) afflicted by a calamity, I praise Allah four times: I praise Allah for not making the calamity greater than what it is. I praise Allah for granting me patience. I praise Allah for the reward I hope for in that calamity and I praise Allah for not placing that calamity in the affairs of my religion”. (2)

How does a Muslim Discern if a Calamity is Recompense for his Sins or a Test from Allāh? – Shaykh Sālih al-Fawzān

Shaykh Fawzān was asked about calamities which afflict the Muslim.

Noble Shaykh – May Allāh give you success – this questioner says,

How does a Muslim discern if a calamity that occurred to him, is due to his sins or a test from Allāh (The Mighty & Majestic)?

It is because of his sins, as Allāh said:

وَمَا أَصَابَكُم مِن مُّصِيبَةٍ فَبِمَا كَسَبَتْ أَيْدِيكُمْ

And whatever of misfortune befalls you, it is because of what your hands have earned. (Ash-Shūra: 30)

And is there anyone who is free from sin?! Nobody is faultless; however the door of repentance is open, Alhamdulillāh.

Current Trials and Calamities and How to Gain Relief from Them – Shaykh Fawzaan

If a person is put to trial and a calamity befalls him, what is the thing which will remove it from him? And how does a person turn to Allaah – The Mighty and Majestic – for protection, deliverance, help – whilst he is in this situation in which he is put to trial through these illnesses?

How to Remove Calamities – Shaykh Al-Fawzaan

If a person is put to trial and a calamity befalls him, what is the thing which will remove it from him? And how does a person turn to Allaah – The Mighty and Majestic – for protection, deliverance, help – whilst he is in this situation in which he is put to trial through these illnesses?

Through supplication; Allah will remove it from him through supplication. He invokes Allah to remove from him that which has afflicted him and to relieve him of it. Allah is Near [to all by his knowledge] Responsive [to the supplication of the one who supplicates to Him]. [Al-Hūd:61]

Secondly, if this calamity or affliction is due to a sin, then verily he repents to Allāh from this sin – from those sins which is the reason behind this punishment that came upon him.

He Thinks Allah Dislikes Him – Shaykh Ahmad an-Najmee

Shaykh Ahmad an-Najmee (rahimahullah) said:
In the hadeeth of Anas (radiaAllaahu anhu):

“If Allah wills good for His slave, He hastens his punishment in this world, and if He wills bad for His slave, He withholds from him (the punishment for) his sin, until He requites him for it on the Day of Resurrection.” [Tirmidhi, Authenticated by Al-Albaani]

This hadeeth informs [us] that a servant [of Allaah] is afflicted with adversities and continually [tested] with calamities, so he thinks this is [because] Allah dislikes him, whilst this is not the case; rather it maybe that Allah loves him and wants to test him with trials, so that he appears on the day of resurrection and [the trials he went through in the worldly life becomes a means of] reducing [his] sins.

The Means And Their Outcomes – ibn Taymiyyah

In The Name of Allaah, The Most Merciful The Bestower of Mercy

Shaikhul Islaam Ibn Taymiyyah (rahimahullaah) said:

‘’The performance of good deeds has praiseworthy outcomes internally and externally, and likewise sins have (evil outcomes internally and externally). Allaah (The Most High) created the means to this and the means to that, just as He (The Most High) made poison a means to falling ill and death.  The means towards (performing) evil have their means to preventing their occurrence.  Repentance and righteous actions wipes away evil deeds and calamities in the worldly life are an expiation for evil deeds.’’
