Defenses for the heart against shirk, vain desires, and detrimental despair

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Exalted, said:

ٱلَّذِينَ ءَامَنُوا۟ وَتَطْمَئِنُّ قُلُوبُهُم بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ أَلَا بِذِكْرِ ٱللَّهِ تَطْمَئِنُّ ٱلْقُلُوبُ

Those who believe (in the Oneness of Allah – Islamic Monotheism), and whose hearts find rest in the remembrance of Allah, Verily, in the remembrance of Allah do hearts find rest. [Al-Rad 28]

Allah said:

Allah has sent down the best statement, a Book (this Quran), its parts resembling each other in goodness and truth, oft-repeated. The skins of those who fear their Lord shiver from it (when they recite it or hear it). Then their skin and their heart soften to the remembrance of Allah. That is the guidance of Allah. He Guides therewith whom He pleases and whomever Allah sends astray, for him there is no guide. [Al-Zumar 23]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

The religion is based on two matters: remembrance of Allah, which necessitates having knowledge and awareness of Allah, and being grateful to Him, which necessitates obedience to Him through acts of worship and (refraining from disobedience). This is the purpose behind the creation of the Jinn, mankind, the heavens and the earth- the reason for which reward and punishment are determined, (the reason for which) Allah revealed the Books and sent the Messengers. It is the truth for which the heavens, the earth and what is between them were created, and what is in opposition to it is falsehood, such as the assumption held by the enemies of Allah that there is no purpose behind the creation [free is Allah from what they attribute to Him].

Allah [The Most High] said: [وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَآءَ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَہُمَا بَـٰطِلاً۬‌ۚ ذَٲلِكَ ظَنُّ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُواْ‌ۚ – And We created not the heaven and the earth and all that is between them without purpose! That is the assumption of those who disbelieve!]

Allah [The Most High] said:
وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَہُمَا لَـٰعِبِينَ
مَا خَلَقۡنَـٰهُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ

And We created not the heavens and the earth, and all that is between them, for mere play; We created them not except with truth (i.e. to examine and test those who are obedient and those who are disobedient and then reward the obedient ones and punish the disobedient ones).

Allah [The Most High] says: [وَمَا خَلَقۡنَا ٱلسَّمَـٰوَٲتِ وَٱلۡأَرۡضَ وَمَا بَيۡنَہُمَآ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ‌ۗ وَإِنَّ ٱلسَّاعَةَ لَأَتِيَةٌ۬‌ۖ – And We created not the heavens and the earth and all that is between them except with truth, and the Hour is surely coming…]

Allah [The Most High] said: [مَا خَلَقَ ٱللَّهُ ذَٲلِكَ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ‌ۚ – Allah did not create this but in truth]. Allah [The Most High] said: Allah [The Most High] said: [أَيَحۡسَبُ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ أَن يُتۡرَكَ سُدًى – Does man think that he will be left Suda [neglected without being punished or rewarded for the obligatory duties enjoined by his Lord (Allah) on him]?

Allah [The Most High] says: [أَفَحَسِبۡتُمۡ أَنَّمَا خَلَقۡنَـٰكُمۡ عَبَثً۬ا وَأَنَّكُمۡ إِلَيۡنَا لَا تُرۡجَعُونَ – Did you think that We had created you in play (without any purpose), and that you would not be brought back to Us?]

Allah [The Most High] says: [وَمَا خَلَقۡتُ ٱلۡجِنَّ وَٱلۡإِنسَ إِلَّا لِيَعۡبُدُونِ – And I (Allah) created not the jinns and humans except they should worship Me (Alone)]

Allah [The Most High] said:

It is Allah Who has created seven heavens and of the earth the like thereof (i.e. seven). His Command descends between them (heavens and earth), that you may know that Allah has power over all things and that Allah surrounds (comprehends) all things in (His) Knowledge.

Therefore, based on what has (already) been mentioned, it has been established that the purpose behind the creation and the Command is so that Allah is remembered and thanked. Allah is to be remembered and not forgotten, and He should be thanked and not shown ingratitude. Allah [Glorified be He and free is He from all imperfections] acknowledges the one who remembers Him, and He is Ready to appreciate good deeds and to recompense the one who is grateful to Him. Remembrance of Allah is the reason Allah acknowledges the one who does so. Being grateful to Allah is the reason why a person is given an increase in blessings and favours. Remembrance of Allah is to be carried out with the heart and tongue; gratitude is to be carried out with one’s heart- out of love for Allah and constantly turning to Him in repentance and obedience with true faith [Islamic Monotheism]. Extolling and praising Him is to be carried out with one’s tongue and being obedient to Him (by performing acts of obedience). [1]

Shaikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: The sincere person tastes the sweetness of servitude to Allah which prevents him from servitude to other than Allah, because there is nothing sweeter and more comforting to the heart than the sweetness found in belief in Allah–The Lord of the entire existence. [2]

The Impact of Love, Fear and Hope In The Worship and Behaviour of Muslim

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

The basis of all sins – major and minor – are three: the heart’s attachment to other than Allah, going along with the intense strength of one’s anger and the intense urge of one’s desires. These three things constitute shirk, injustice and indecency. Ascribing partners to Allah and invoking other than Him is the ultimate thing related to the heart’s attachment to other than Allah, murder is the ultimate thing related to going along with one’s intense anger and fornication is the ultimate thing related to going along with the intense urge of one’s desires. Because this, Allah mentioned the three together in the verse: [وَٱلَّذِينَ لَا يَدۡعُونَ مَعَ ٱللَّهِ إِلَـٰهًا ءَاخَرَ وَلَا يَقۡتُلُونَ ٱلنَّفۡسَ ٱلَّتِى حَرَّمَ ٱللَّهُ إِلَّا بِٱلۡحَقِّ وَلَا يَزۡنُونَ – And those who invoke not any other ilah (god) along with Allah, nor kill such life as Allah has forbidden, except for just cause, nor commit illegal sexual intercourse]. [Al-Furqan. 68] [3]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim said: The people enter the fire through three paths: Ambiguous matters that bring about doubt in the religion ordained by Allah. Desires that leads to giving precedence to evil desires over obedience to Allah and seeking after His Pleasure. (Uncontrolled) anger that leads to transgression against Allah’s creation. The basis of all sins are three: Pride, and it is what led Iblees to the situation he found himself. (Uncontrolled) eagerness, and it is what led to Adam’s expulsion from Jannah. Envy, and it is what led one of the sons of Adam to (kill) his brother. Whoever is protected from these three affairs will be protected from evil. Disbelief occurs due to pride, sins occur due to disobedience and transgression and oppression occur due to envy. [4]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: Hearts that are emptied of love for Allah, turned away from Him and seeking remedy from others besides Him, are afflicted with infatuation with images. This is because when the heart is filled with love for Allah and a strong love for meeting Him, this infatuation with images is repelled from it. For this reason, Allah, The Most High, stated about Yusuf, peace be upon him:

كَذَٰلِكَ لِنَصْرِفَ عَنْهُ السُّوءَ وَالْفَحْشَاءَ ۚ إِنَّهُ مِنْ عِبَادِنَا الْمُخْلَصِينَ

Thus it was, that We might turn away from him evil and illegal sexual intercourse. Surely, he was one of Our chosen, guided slaves.

This shows that sincerity is a means to repelling (evil). Because of this, some of the pious predecessors said: “Infatuation is an agitation in empty hearts”. Meaning: emptied of other than what they crave for. [5]

Allah, The Most High, said:
وَعَسَىٰٓ أَن تَكۡرَهُواْ شَيۡـًٔ۬ا وَهُوَ خَيۡرٌ۬ لَّڪُمۡ‌ۖ وَعَسَىٰٓ أَن تُحِبُّواْ شَيۡـًٔ۬ا وَهُوَ شَرٌّ۬ لَّكُمۡ‌ۗ وَٱللَّهُ يَعۡلَمُ وَأَنتُمۡ لَا تَعۡلَمُونَ

And it may be that you dislike a thing which is good for you and that you like a thing which is bad for you. Allah knows but you do not know.” [AI-Baqarah. Verse 216]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

There is for the servant -in this verse – a number of insightful guidelines, underlying benefits and welfare. (This is) because indeed if he knows that Al-Makruh (what is hated) can bring forth Al-Mahbub (i.e. what is beloved), and vice versa, then neither would he feel safe from the harm that might occur from something that makes him happy nor would he lose hope whilst expecting a final source of happiness from a situation of harm. This is because he does not have (infinite or perfect) knowledge of the Awaqib (i.e. the final outcomes), but Allah knows that which he does not know.

There is nothing more beneficial for him than fulfilling Allah’s commands, even if it is difficult for him in the beginning and his soul dislikes it, because all its end result will be good – a means to happiness, pleasure and joy. Similarly, there is nothing more harmful for him than doing what he has been forbidden, even if his soul desires and inclines towards it because all its end result will lead to pain, grief, evil and calamities. A distinguishing characteristic of (sound) intellect is that it prefers to bear little pain whose end results will lead to great enjoyment and abundant good, and it avoids that little enjoyment whose end results will lead to great pain and prolonged evil. The observations of an ignorant person does not permit him to (pay attention to the true or real) goals behind events that occur from the very beginning of an affair, but as for the sensible person, he always looks at the (true or real) goals behind those events. He looks at the praiseworthy and unpraiseworthy goals that are not obvious (to the ignorant one). He sees what is forbidden as tasty food that is mixed with deadly poison, therefore, whenever he is urged towards eating that food due to its tastiness, he is turned away due to the poison in it. As for the commandments, he sees them as bitter medication that will lead to physical well-being and cure; therefore, whenever he is turned away from the medication due to its bitterness, he is then urged towards it due to its benefits.

However, this requires the blessing of knowledge by way of which a person can perceive the (praiseworthy and unpraiseworthy goals) behind those events that occur from the very beginning of an affair, as well as firm patience that would enable him to bear the difficulties upon the path towards achieving the expected goals. If he does not have certainty and patience, it would be difficult for him to achieve that; but if he has firm certainty and patience, he would be facilitated with ease whilst bearing every difficulty in his pursuit of everlasting good and enjoyment.

The servant should hand over his affair to the One (Allah) who knows – (perfectly without anything hidden from Him)- the end result of affairs. He should be pleased with what Allah chooses and decrees for him because of the good end result he hopes for.

Neither should he make suggestions to his Lord nor put forward his choice over that of his Lord, nor does he ask for something about which he has no knowledge because it may be that what will bring about harm and destruction on him is found in what he asks, whilst he does not know. Therefore, he does not choose anything over what his Lord chooses; rather he asks his Lord to choose the best for him and make him pleased with what has been chosen for him, because there is nothing more beneficial for him than this.

When he hands over his affair to his Lord and is pleased with what has been chosen for him, his Lord facilitates him with strength, determination and patience in that which has been chosen for him; repel the afflictions he would have encountered due to the choice he makes and show him some of the good end results of the choice his Lord made for him, which could not have been attained through the choice he makes for himself.

He is relieved of the difficult reasoning about all types of choices and his heart is emptied of projections through which he ascends one obstacle and descends into another. And alongside this, he cannot escape what is decreed for him. If he is pleased with Allaah’s choice, then what has been decreed will come to him, whilst he is deserving of commendation and graceful in it; otherwise, what has been decreed will come to him while he is blameworthy and ungraceful, because he is left with the choice he made for himself. [6]

There is no justification for anyone to commit suicide

Allah said:

And do not kill yourselves (nor kill one another). Surely, Allah is Most Merciful to you. [Al-Nisa 29]

Allah – The Most High – said:

And among mankind is he who worships Allah as it were, upon the very edge (i.e. in doubt); if good befalls him, he is content therewith; but if a trial befalls him, he turns back on his face. He loses both this world and the Hereafter. That is the evident loss. [Al-Hajj. 11]

Imam Al-Bukhari said, “Chapter: “And among mankind is he who worships Allah as it were upon the very edge” . Ibn Abbas said about this verse: A man used to come to Madinah and if his wife gave birth to a son and his mares produce offspring, he said, “This religion of Islam is good”. But if his wife did not give birth and his mares did not produce offspring, he would say, “This religion is evil”. [Al-Bukhaari 4742]

Imam As-Sadi said about this verse: There are those among the people who are weak in Iman- neither has Iman entered into his heart (with certainty) nor has it tasted its sweetness; rather, it entered into his heart either due to fear or by way of custom (merely entered due to what he saw the people doing) in a way that does not allow their Iman to be firm during trials. [فَإِنۡ أَصَابَهُ ۥ خَيۡرٌ ٱطۡمَأَنَّ بِهِۦ‌ۖ – If good befalls him, he is content therewith] – Meaning: When his provision continues to come easily and he does not face any hardship, he is contented due to that good and not due to his Iman. It maybe that Allah grants this person well-being and does not put him to trial that makes him turn him away from his religion.

[وَإِنۡ أَصَابَتۡهُ فِتۡنَةٌ ٱنقَلَبَ عَلَىٰ وَجۡهِهِۦ – But if a trial befalls him, he turns back on his face] – Meaning: Either due to hardship or cessation of something he loves, he exits the religion.

[خَسِرَ ٱلدُّنۡيَا وَٱلۡأَخِرَةَ – He loses both this world and the Hereafter] – Meaning: As for in the worldly life, he does not receive what he wishes due to exiting the religion. The one who makes apostasy his main source of wealth – as a replacement of his religion through which he thinks that he will obtain what he hopes for, he will not receive except that which has been portioned out for him by Allah. As for the afterlife, it is clear that he will be forbidden from entry into paradise whose expanse is as wide as the heavens and the earth. He will be deserving of the hell fire. [ذَٲلِكَ هُوَ ٱلۡخُسۡرَانُ ٱلۡمُبِينُ – That is the evident loss]. [7]

Imam Ibn Al-Jawzee, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: Indeed, many people become helpless when their loved ones die. So amongst them is one who tears his clothes, one who strikes his face out of despair and one who raise objections. Indeed, I have seen an old man who reached nearly eighty years of age and used to strictly guard the congregational prayer. Then a son of his died and he said, “It is not worthwhile for anyone to supplicate, for indeed he will not be answered”. He then said, “Indeed Allah has turned away from us, for He has not left us with a child’’. Thus, I realised that his prayers and performance of good deeds was merely a customary thing because they were not nurtured upon knowledge and Iman. These (people) are those who worship Allah on an edge. [8]

Everyone will face trials: https://salafidawah.uk/2025/03/20/the-prophet-drew-a-square-to-demonstrate-the-worldly-hopes-afflictions-and-death/

Sa’eed Bin Jubayr, may Allah have mercy upon him, said, “Patience is the person’s acknowledgment that what has afflicted him is from Allaah, seeking for reward from Allaah and hoping for Allaah’s good recompense. Indeed, a man maybe in a state of distress whilst he is being whipped, but you see nothing from him except patience”. [9]

Regarding the statement “Patience is the person’s acknowledgement that what has afflicted him is from Allaah”, Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said, “It is as if this statement is an explanation of the statement “Innaa lil laah – to Allaah we belong”. So, the person acknowledges that he belongs to Allaah and his owner does whatever He wants with him. Regarding the statement “Seeking for reward from Allaah”, Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said, “It is as if this statement is an explanation of the statement “Wa Innaa Ilayhi Raaji’oon – and to Him (i.e. Allaah) we shall return”, meaning we shall return to You, so that you reward us due to our patience and the reward for being patient during calamity will not be lost”. Regarding the statement “Indeed, a man maybe in a state of distress whilst he is being whipped, but you do not see from him except patience”, Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said, “Patience is not that one bears the whip, rather it is to restrain the heart from getting angry with Allaah’s decree and to restrain the tongue from complaining about Allaah. Whoever is whipped and his heart is displeased with Allaah, then he is not one who is patient”. [10]

Umar Ibn Al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “The best life we have attained is through patience, and if patience was a man, he would have been an honourable (or noble man)”. [11]

Ali Bin Abee Talib, may Allah be pleased with him, said, “Indeed, patience concerning Imaan is the same as the head to the body, so if the head is cut off, the body will perish”. Then he raised his voice and said, “Indeed, there is no (sound) faith for the one who has no patience).” [12]

Ash-Sha’bee [may Allah have mercy upon him] reported that Shurayh [may Allah have mercy upon him] said, “Verily if I am afflicted by a calamity, I praise Allah four times. I praise (Allah) that it is not greater than what it was. I praise (Allah) as He blessed me with the patience to bear it. I praise (Allah) as He bestows on me (the ability) to remember what I hope for of reward, and I praise (Allah) for not placing this calamity in my religion”. [13]

Yahyah Bin Mu’aadh [may Allah have mercy upon him] said, “Paradise is surrounded by hardships and you hate them, and Hellfire is surrounded by desires and you seek them, so you are nothing except like a severely ill patient. If your soul exercises patience with the reluctance to take medicine (and then take it), you gain wellness (wellbeing) through patience; but if your soul is anxious about what it faces (and thus you refrain from taking the medication), the illness with which it suffers will prolong”. [14]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated: Despair only serves to delight one’s enemies, disappoint friends, anger Allah, please the devil, diminish one’s rewards, and weaken oneself. However, if one exercises patience and perseverance, they will frustrate the devil and send him away defeated, please Allah, bring joy to friends, and dishearten enemies. Furthermore, they will support their brothers and offer them consolation even before seeking solace for themselves. This exemplifies true steadfastness and the highest form of perfection, which is not found in actions such as striking one’s face, tearing one’s garments, or lamenting with cries of despair and frustration over what is decreed. [15]

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated: “When a servant of Allah realizes that he belongs to Allah and that his ultimate destination is with Him, he finds solace in his afflictions. This understanding serves as one of the most effective remedies for those in distress, beneficial both in this life and the hereafter. It encompasses two fundamental truths that, when acknowledged by a person, and provide comfort in times of hardship. The first is that the person, along with his family and wealth, is truly the property of Allah, the Exalted. The second is that the servant’s return and accountability lie with Allah, his true Master. Ultimately, he must leave the world behind and approach his Lord alone, just as he was created initially, without family, wealth, or kin, but only with his deeds, both good and bad. Given that this is the servant’s beginning, what he possesses, and his end, how can he rejoice in what he has or grieve over what he has lost?” [16]

Ibn al-Qayyim stated, “The bitterness of this world is, in fact, the sweetness of the Hereafter, as Allah Almighty transforms them in this manner. Conversely, the sweetness of this world is akin to the bitterness of the Hereafter. It is far better for one to transition from temporary bitterness to everlasting sweetness than the opposite. If this is unclear to you, consider the words of the truthful and trustworthy: “Paradise is surrounded by hardships, while Hell is surrounded by desires”. (reported by Muslim, 2822). In this context, the intellects of people vary, revealing the true nature of individuals. Many prefer the fleeting sweetness of this world over the enduring sweetness of the Hereafter, unable to endure a moment of bitterness for the sake of eternal bliss, nor a moment of humiliation for everlasting honour, nor a trial for the sake of eternal well-being. For them, the present is a testimony, while the future remains unseen, their faith is weak, and the authority of desire prevails. This leads to a preference for immediate gains and a rejection of the Hereafter.” [17]

We ask Allah:

O Allah! By Your Knowledge of the unseen and by Your Power over creation, let me live if life is good for me, and let me die if death is good for me; O Allah! I ask You to grant me (the blessing of having) fear of You in private and public, and I ask You (to make me utter) a statement of truth in times of contentment and anger, and I ask You for moderation when in a state of wealth and poverty, and I ask you for blessings that never ceases, and I ask You for the coolness of my eye that never ends, and I ask You (to make me pleased) after (Your) decree; and I ask You for a life of (ease, comfort, tranquillity, etc) after death; I ask You for the delight of looking at Your Face (i.e. in the Hereafter) and yearning to meet You without any harm and misleading trials (coming upon me). O Allah! Adorn us with the adornment of Iman, and make us (from those who are) guided and guiding (others). [18]

O Allah! Rectify my religion for me, which is the safeguard of my affairs; rectify my worldly [affairs], wherein is my livelihood; and rectify my Afterlife to which is my return; and make life for me [as a means of] increase in every good and make death for me as a rest from every evil. [19]

O Allah, help me remember You, thank You, and worship You in an excellent manner]. [20]

The Comprehensive Message

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Imam Ibn Al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

Muhammad’s, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, Ummah is not in need of anyone after him; rather the only need they have is someone to convey what he came with.

Muhammad’s message is comprehensive, universal and preserved. This universality, comprehensiveness and preservation is not limited to (any time, place or situation), rather it is comprehensive for those to whom Muhammad was sent [the whole world] and likewise with regards to everything that is needed in the fundamental and subsidiary issues of the religion.

Muhammad’s message is sufficient, all embracing and universal- nothing else is needed besides it. It has not isolated any affair of truth needed by his Ummah in their sciences and deeds. The Messenger of Allah did not leave this world until he acquainted his Ummah with everything. He even taught them the etiquettes of using the toilet; the etiquettes of sexual relations; the etiquettes of sleep and after waking up; the etiquettes of eating, drinking and travel.

He acquainted them with the etiquettes of speech and silence; the etiquettes of keeping company with the people and seclusion. He acquainted them with the affairs of illness, good health, poverty and wealth. He acquainted them with all the affairs of life and death. He described Allah’s throne, the angels, the jinn, the hell fire and the day of judgement in such a manner as if one has seen them with the naked eye. He informed them about their Lord and His Perfect Names and Attributes, and that Allah alone is their true object of worship.

He acquainted them with the Prophets of old and their nations – the events that took place between them and their nations – in such a manner as if one was present at that time. He acquainted them with all the means to good and the paths of evil- in general and in detail- which no other prophet informed his nation. He acquainted them with death and what will take place in the grave – either bliss or punishment. He acquainted them with the evidences and proofs of Tawhid [i.e. the oneness of Allah in His Lordship, Names and Attributes, and that Allah alone has the right to be worshipped].

He acquainted them with Prophet hood and the affairs of the Afterlife, and he refuted all the sects of disbelief and misguidance. He acquainted them with war strategies- how to confront the enemy, the way to achieve victory and conquests. If only they knew and understood these affairs in the correct manner [i.e. the manner it should be understood], they would not be overcome by their enemy. He acquainted them with the plots of Iblees and the ways through which he approaches them, and the ways to repel those plots and plans. He acquainted them with the soul- its characteristics and faults- in such a manner that they are not in need of anyone else to tell them about it. He taught them how to live their daily lives and had they acknowledged and acted upon this; their worldly affairs would be firmly established. He brought them all the means of success in this life and the next, and they do not need anyone besides him. So how can it be said that the path of Muhammad is in need of something else outside of it. The reason for such a claim is due to the weak and little understanding of a person. Allah [The Most High] said:

أَوَلَمْ يَكْفِهِمْ أَنَّا أَنزَلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ يُتْلَىٰ عَلَيْهِمْ ۚ إِنَّ فِي ذَٰلِكَ لَرَحْمَةً وَذِكْرَىٰ لِقَوْمٍ يُؤْمِنُونَ

Is it not sufficient for them that We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur’an) which is recited to them? Verily, herein is mercy and a reminder (or an admonition) for a people who believe.

Allah [The Most High] said:

وَنَزَّلْنَا عَلَيْكَ الْكِتَابَ تِبْيَانًا لِّكُلِّ شَيْءٍ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةً وَبُشْرَىٰ لِلْمُسْلِمِينَ

And We have sent down to you the Book (the Qur’an) as an exposition of everything, a guidance, a mercy, and glad tidings for those who have submitted themselves (to Allah as Muslims).

Allah [The Most High] said:

يَا أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ جَاءَتْكُم مَّوْعِظَةٌ مِّن رَّبِّكُمْ وَشِفَاءٌ لِّمَا فِي الصُّدُورِ وَهُدًى وَرَحْمَةٌ لِّلْمُؤْمِنِينَ

O mankind! There has come to you a good advice from your Lord (i.e. the Qur’an, ordering all that is good and forbidding all that is evil), and a healing for that (disease of ignorance, doubt, hypocrisy and differences, etc.) in your breasts, – a guidance and a mercy (explaining lawful and unlawful things, etc.) for the believers.

Corrupt creed may reveal underlying mental health concerns

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Al-Allamah Muqbil Bin Haadee Al-Waad’ee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said:

Shaikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy upon him, mentioned in his tremendous book Minhaj As-Sunnah Vol 1 page 13: And from the foolish behaviour of the (Rafidah) is that they make a similitude of one they are angry with, for example they choose a female sheep that is reddish in colour because Aa’isha, may Allah be pleased with her, was named Al-Humayraa’u –very white complexion with slight redness (I); thus, they regard this female sheep to be Aa’isha and punish it by pulling its hair and other than that. And they consider this to be punishment for Aa’isha, may Allah be pleased with her.

Some of them named two donkeys amongst the millstone donkeys- one Abu Bakr and the other Umar; then they would punish these two donkeys and consider it to be punishment for Abu Bakr and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them.

Sometimes they wrote the names of Abu Bakr and Umar, may Allah be pleased with them] under their feet, so one of the Muslim rulers began to beat the feet of those who did so, whilst saying, “Rather, I am beating Abu Bakr and Umar”, and he did not stop beating their feet until it became paralyzed.

Amongst them is one who names his dogs AbuBakr and Umar, and then curses them. And amongst them is the one that when his dog is named Bakeer, he beats the (person) who gave it that name and says, “You name my dog with the name of the inhabitants of the fire!”

And amongst them are those who extol Abu LuLu’a Al-Majoosee Al-Kaafir [The fire worshipper], who was a slave of Mugheerah Bin Shubah [may Allaah be pleased with him] and he killed Umar Ibnul Khattaab [may Allaah be pleased with him]. They extol Abu LuLu’ah for killing Umar, (even though Abu Lulu’ah) was a disbeliever and fire worshipper.

Footnote: (I) Al-Humayraa’u: The Prophet [peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him] referred to Aa’isha [may Allaah be pleased with her] as Al-Humayraa’u and this is found in a hadith narrated by Abu Salamah [may Allah be pleased with him] and reported by Imaam An-Nasaa’ee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] in Sunan Al-Kub’raa’ Hadith Number:8951. Imaam Al-Albaanee [may Allaah have mercy upon him] said that this Hadeeth is authentic and all its narrators are Thiqaat (trustworthy) [Silsilah Al-Hadeeth As-Saheehah. Hadith Number 3277]

Hafidh Ibn Hajr says that this hadith is Saheeh. See Fathul Baaree under chapter: ‘Al-Hiraab Wad-Darq Yaumul Eed’. He also says that the other narrations containing this word ‘Al-Humaraa’u’ are weak, but only this one reported by An-Nasaa-ee on the authority of Abee Salamah is authentic.

Denial

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allah [The Most High] said:

[بَلِ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ عَلَىٰ نَفۡسِهِۦ بَصِيرَةٌ۬ وَلَوۡ أَلۡقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُ – Nay! Man will be a witness against himself; though he may put forth his excuses] [Al-Qiyaamah 14-15]

Man will be a witness against himself]- Meaning: A witness and accept facts about himself; [وَلَوۡ أَلۡقَىٰ مَعَاذِيرَهُ – Though he may put forth his excuses]- Meaning: Those excuses will not be accepted; rather it will confirm what [a person did], just as Allah stated: [اقْرَأْ كِتَابَكَ كَفَىٰ بِنَفْسِكَ الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكَ حَسِيبًا – Read your book. You yourself are sufficient as a reckoner against you this Day] [Al-Israa. 14]

Even if the servant of Allah denies or seeks excuses concerning what he did, his denial and excuse will not benefit him in anything; for indeed his hearing and sight, and all his limbs will witness against him concerning what he used to do, and that is because his time for a return to seeking Allah’s Pleasure had expired, just as Allah said:

[فَيَوۡمَٮِٕذٍ۬ لَّا يَنفَعُ ٱلَّذِينَ ظَلَمُواْ مَعۡذِرَتُهُمۡ وَلَا هُمۡ يُسۡتَعۡتَبُونَ – So on that Day no excuse of theirs will avail those who did wrong, nor will they be allowed (then) to return to seek Allah’s Pleasure] [Ar-Rum. 57] [1]

Man will be a witness against himself]- Meaning: He is a witness against himself and he knows what he did, even if he seeks an excuse and denies, just as Allah said: [اقْرَأْ كِتَابَكَ كَفَىٰ بِنَفْسِكَ الْيَوْمَ عَلَيْكَ حَسِيبًا – Read your book. You yourself are sufficient as a reckoner against you this Day]. [Al-Israa: 14]

Ali Ibn Abee Talhah reported from Ibn Abbas regarding the meaning of the Ayah: [بَلِ ٱلۡإِنسَـٰنُ عَلَىٰ نَفۡسِهِۦ بَصِيرَةٌ۬ – Nay! Man will be a witness against himself]- by way of his hearing, sight, two hands, two legs and his (other) limbs. Qatadah said, ‘’He is a witness against himself’’. In another narration from Qatadah, he said, ‘’By Allah! If you wish to see him, you would see him looking at the faults and sins of the people, whilst being heedless of his own sins’’. [2]

Their plots cannot move the mountains

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah said:

Indeed, they planned their plot, and their plot was with Allah, though their plot was a great (one, still) it would never be able to remove the mountains.

“Indeed, they planned their plot, and their plot was with Allah”.

There are four statements of the scholars regarding the above: That it was Namrud when he debated with Ibrahim about his Lord. That it was about Bakhtanasar. That it is about the nations of the past and their plotting which necessitates Shirk. That it is about those who plotted against the Messenger when they desired to kill him.

“And their plot was with Allah”

Meaning: Their plot is recorded so that Allah will recompense them.

“though their plot was a great (one, still) it would never be able to remove the mountains”.

Az-Zujaj said: Even if they plot reached the severity where it could move a mountain, they will still not be able to bring the affair of Islam to an end”. [1]

Even if their plot were to reach a stage where it could move a mountain, Allah will still aid the religion He has ordained. [2]

Al-Awfee reported from Ibn Abbaas who said: Their plot cannot move mountains. Ibn Jareer said: This deed they commit is against themselves, such as associating partners to Allah and disbelief in Him, cannot bring any harm to the mountains or anything, rather it will haunt them”. [3]

The signs of Allah, His divine laws and His manifest miracles at the hands of the Messengers are like mountains in robustness and firmness. So the intent is to belittle their plot and that it cannot remove the signs and Messenger ships. [4]

[3] Tawhid – Pure Islamic Monotheism

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Most High, said:

Thus have We sent you (O Muhammad) to a community before whom other communities have passed away, in order that you might recite unto them what We have inspired to you, while they disbelieve in the Most Beneficent (Allah) Say: “He is my Lord! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He)! In Him is my trust, and to Him will be my return with repentance.’’ [Ar-Ra’d 30]

“Thus have We sent you (O Muhammad) to a community”. Meaning We sent you to a people to call them to guidance.

“before whom other communities have passed away”. Meaning We also sent our Messengers to the previous nations, therefore you are neither a new thing among the Messengers of Allah nor the first Messenger, (thus, they do not have any excuse) to reject your Messengership based on the assumption that you have brought something strange; nor do you say anything based on your own (opinion, view or desire) ; rather you only recite Allah’s revelations to them, which purifies the hearts and rectify the souls. However, your people disbelieve in Ar-Rahmaan  [“The Most Beneficent” – (Allah)] and they do not welcome His Mercy and Benevolence with acceptance and gratefulness; and the greatest of this is that He has sent a Messenger to them and revealed a Book to them, instead, they turn away and reject it. Do they not ponder upon the affair of those generations who came before them – those who belied the Messengers – and the manner in which Allah punished them due to their sins?!

“Say: He (Allah) is my Lord! None has the right to be worshipped but He! In Him is my trust, and to Him will be my return with repentance”.

This statement establishes two categories of Tawhid; Ar-Rububiyyah and Al-Uluhiyyah. Allah is your Lord, Who nurtured you with blessings from the time He created you, and He alone is the true deity in whom you place your trust and reliance in all affairs, and to Him you turn in all your acts of worship and for all your needs.

[2] Tawhid – Pure Islamic Monotheism

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy

Allah, The Most High, said:

ٱللَّهُ لَآ إِلَـٰهَ إِلَّا هُوَ‌ۚ لَيَجۡمَعَنَّكُمۡ إِلَىٰ يَوۡمِ ٱلۡقِيَـٰمَةِ لَا رَيۡبَ فِيهِ‌ۗ وَمَنۡ أَصۡدَقُ مِنَ ٱللَّهِ حَدِيثً۬ا

Allah! La ilaha illa Huwa (none has the right to be worshipped but He). Surely, He will gather you together on the Day of Resurrection about which there is no doubt. And who is truer in statement than Allah? [An-Nisa 87]

Allah, The Most High, informed (us) about His Oneness and that there is neither any true deity nor any true object of worship besides Him, because He, The Most High, alone is the possessor of Perfect Attributes, the Creator of everything and the One in absolute control of all the affairs of the universe.

Allah is the One Who bestowed both the apparent blessings (i.e. Islam, the lawful pleasures of this world, including health, good looks, etc.) and hidden blessings (i.e. One’s belief in Allah, knowledge, wisdom, guidance for doing righteous deeds, and also the pleasures and delights of the Hereafter in Paradise, etc.). All this necessitates that He alone has the right to be worshipped and obeyed through all acts of servitude to Him.

He, The Most High, is the One Who will recompense mankind and Jinn based on what they fulfilled or neglected of this servitude to Him, and that is why He made an oath regarding the fact that the day of recompense will take place. He said:

Surely, He will gather you together on the Day of Resurrection about which there is no doubt”.

Meaning: Allah will gather all the early generations and later generations in one place, and there is no doubt about the fact that the Day of Resurrection will take place, which is confirmed by both sound intellectual proofs and divine textual proofs.

As for the sound intellectual proofs, one witnesses the fact that Allah revives the earth  [i.e. gives life to vegetation] after its death, as well as the fact that Allah did not create (human beings, the Jinn, and all that in the universe) without a purpose.

As for the divine textual proofs, He informed (us) that there is none truer in statements than Him; rather He made an oath regarding this affair. He said:

And who is truer in statement than Allah?”

He also commanded His Messenger to make an oath regarding this affair:

زَعَمَ ٱلَّذِينَ كَفَرُوٓاْ أَن لَّن يُبۡعَثُواْ‌ۚ قُلۡ بَلَىٰ وَرَبِّى لَتُبۡعَثُنَّ ثُمَّ لَتُنَبَّؤُنَّ بِمَا عَمِلۡتُمۡ‌ۚ وَذَٲلِكَ عَلَى ٱللَّهِ يَسِيرٌ۬

The disbelievers pretend that they will never be resurrected (for the Account). Say (O Muhammad): “Yes! By my Lord, you will certainly be resurrected, then you will be informed of (and recompensed for) what you did, and that is easy for Allah] [at-Taghabun. 7]

And who is truer in statement than Allah?

Meaning: Allah informed us that His statements are absolute truth, therefore, anything that opposes what He has stated regarding creed and deeds is falsehood, for what He has stated regarding creed and deeds is absolute truth and certainty.

A quick conversation with the young shuttle aficionado

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allah, The Exalted, said:

وَسَخَّرَ لَكُم مَّا فِى ٱلسَّمَٰوَٰتِ وَمَا فِى ٱلْأَرْضِ جَمِيعًا مِّنْهُ إِنَّ فِى ذَٰلِكَ لَءَايَٰتٍ لِّقَوْمٍ يَتَفَكَّرُونَ

And has subjected to you all that is in the heavens and all that is in the earth; it is all as a favour and kindness from Him. Verily, in it are signs for a people who think deeply. [Al-Jathiyah 13]

See you not (O men) that Allah has subjected for you whatsoever is in the heavens and whatsoever is in the earth, and has completed and perfected His Graces upon you, (both) apparent (i.e. Islamic Monotheism, and the lawful pleasures of this world, including health, good looks, etc.) and hidden [i.e. One’s Faith in Allah (of Islamic Monotheism) knowledge, wisdom, guidance for doing righteous deeds, and also the pleasures and delights of the Hereafter in Paradise, etc.]? Yet of mankind is he who disputes about Allah without knowledge or guidance or a Book giving light! [Luqman 20]

See you not (O Muhammad) that Allah merges the night into the day (i.e. the decrease in the hours of the night are added in the hours of the day), and merges the day into the night (i.e. the decrease in the hours of day are added in the hours of night), and has subjected the sun and the moon, each running its course for a term appointed; and that Allah is All-Aware of what you do. [Luqman 29]

He merges the night into the day (i.e. the decrease in the hours of the night are added to the hours of the day), and He merges the day into the night (i.e. the decrease in the hours of the day are added to the hours of the night). And He has subjected the sun and the moon, each runs its course for a term appointed. Such is Allah your Lord; His is the kingdom. And those, whom you invoke or call upon instead of Him, own not even a Qitmir (the thin membrane over the datestone). [Fatir 13]

He has created the heavens and the earth with truth. He makes the night to go in the day and makes the day to go in the night. And He has subjected the sun and the moon. Each running (on a fixed course) for an appointed term. Verily, He is the All-Mighty, the Oft-Forgiving. [Az-Zumar 5]

Allah, The Mighty and Majestic, said:

See you not that Allah has subjected to you (mankind) all that is on the earth, and the ships that sail through the sea by His Command? He withholds the heaven from falling on the earth except by His Leave. Verily, Allah is, for mankind, full of Kindness, Most Merciful. [Al-Hajj 65]

Firstly, my noble teenage Muslim brother! These verses, along with many others, unmistakably illustrate that Allah is the sole creator of all magnificent things, including humanity and the Jinn. Thus, whenever we observe someone’s accomplishments, whether in worldly pursuits or religious endeavors, we must acknowledge that these blessings come from Allah, the One who gave us life and shaped our existence. Recognizing this truth is essential; otherwise, we risk losing sight of the source behind human achievements.

Second, your exploration of the factors that could jeopardise rockets, satellites, or shuttles particularly the impact of winds and storms, is truly captivating. Some people have delved into numerous aspects of this topic, examining how various elements of our universe contribute to these risks, especially in relation to extreme weather conditions. Amidst this intriguing dialogue, some among your generation is facinated by the sight of rockets and other things launching into the sky. Whether they can successfully reach space or the moon is debated, but we understand that your fascination with such events ignites curiosity and a yearning to understand some of the activities of humans.

Thirdly, it is essential to recognize that while scientists frequently investigate the causes of failures in various shuttle missions, they always neglect to acknowledge the One (Allah) Who provided the resources and means necessary for the construction of these objects and the atmosphere in which they function. When discussing the factors contributing to their successes or failures, they attribute the outcomes solely to these environmental influences. Numerous individuals discuss the wind and its impacts, yet they overlook the One that controls and determines what it does. They highlight the terrifying challenges it poses for airplane pilots and shuttles when its speed and direction suddenly changes, and then quickly resort to invoking the phrase “Mother Nature” when their efforts fall short. Their conversations about success, failure, accidents, or disasters focus solely on the methods used and the assessment of risks, neglecting the fundamental truth that everything ultimately lies in the hands of the Creator. All means and outcomes are subject to His absolute Will. While they may reluctantly accept that a disaster was unavoidable due to potential wind shear and clear air turbulence in specific directions at certain times, whose measurements were not possible, nor could they predict the strength or effects of these conditions in advance, no mention of the Creator’s Will and Decree is heard from their tongues.

They recognise their limitations and the constraints of their knowledge, understanding that none can determine weather conditions with certainty. Despite this, there is no acknowledgment of a higher power; instead, they turn away, while constantly remaining uncertain about the specific circumstances that will suddenly determine outcomes, as they cannot accurately ascertain the strength or weakness of the wind, or other events in the universe. None can ascertain what will occur in the next moment, except the All-Knower, The All-Mighty and All-Wise Creator. Before we reference Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy on him, regarding the dangers of knowledge that lacks belief in Al-Qadaa Wal Qadr and the importance of reliance upon Allah while utilising the means available to us, let’s share some verses on this link that highlight the incredible power of the winds.

Some verses of the Qur’an regarding wind

Thereafter, consider how Allah bestowed remarkable blessins upon His grateful servants. Among them is Sulayman, peace be upon him, to whom He granted a kingdom unmatched throughout history, enduring until the Day of Judgment. Allah said:

And (remember) Dawud (David) and Sulaiman (Solomon), when they gave judgement in the case of the field in which the sheep of certain people had pastured at night and We were witness to their judgement. And We made Sulaiman (Solomon) to understand (the case), and to each of them We gave Hukman (right judgement of the affairs and Prophethood) and knowledge. And We subjected the mountains and the birds to glorify Our Praises along with Dawud (David), And it was We Who were the doers (of all these things). And We taught him the making of metal coats of mail (for battles), to protect you in your fighting. Are you then grateful? And to Sulaiman (Solomon) (We subjected) the wind strongly raging, running by his command towards the land which We had blessed. And of everything We are the All-Knower. And of the Shayatin (devils) (from the jinns) were some who dived for him, and did other work besides that; and it was We Who guarded them. [Al-Anbiya 78-82]

And to Solomon (We subjected) the wind, its morning (stride from sunrise till midnoon) was a month’s (journey), and its afternoon (stride from the midday decline of the sun to sunset) was a month’s (journey i.e. in one day he could travel two months’ journey). And We caused a fount of (molten) brass to flow for him, and there were jinns that worked in front of him, by the Leave of his Lord, and whosoever of them turned aside from Our Command, We shall cause him to taste of the torment of the blazing Fire. They worked for him what he desired, (making) high rooms, images, basins as large as reservoirs, and (cooking) cauldrons fixed (in their places). “Work you, O family of Dawud (David), with thanks!” But few of My slaves are grateful. [Saba 12-13]

Look at how grateful Sulayman was after being granted success in his pursuit. Allah informed us:

Which of you can bring me her throne before they come to me surrendering themselves in obedience?]

[ قَالَ عِفۡرِيتٌ۬ مِّنَ ٱلۡجِنِّ أَنَا۟ ءَاتِيكَ بِهِۦ قَبۡلَ أَن تَقُومَ مِن مَّقَامِكَ‌ۖ وَإِنِّى عَلَيۡهِ لَقَوِىٌّ أَمِينٌ۬ – An Ifrit (strong) from the jinns said: “I will bring it to you before you rise from your place (council). And verily, I am indeed strong, and trustworthy for such work].

[قَالَ عِفۡرِيتٌ۬ مِّنَ ٱلۡجِنِّ – An Ifrit (strong) from the jinns said]. An Ifreet is an extremely strong and forceful one (amongst the Jinn). And what is apparent here is that at that Sulayman was in Sham at the time, so the distance between him and Saba was a period of four months journey- two months to go there and two months to return; however regardless of this, the Ifreet said, “I take it upon myself to bring it – regardless of its big size and heftiness, and regardless of its distance- before you can rise from your (council). Customarily, the councils take a long time and they take most of the forenoon- about one third of the day. This is the mostly the time period of councils, but it may take lesser or more than that. So, there was a subject of this great King (Sulaymaan) who was bestowed with the power and ability to do what was greater than the offer of the Ifreet. Allah said:

[قَالَ ٱلَّذِى عِندَهُ ۥ عِلۡمٌ۬ مِّنَ ٱلۡكِتَـٰبِ أَنَا۟ ءَاتِيكَ بِهِۦ قَبۡلَ أَن يَرۡتَدَّ إِلَيۡكَ طَرۡفُكَ‌ۚ – One with whom was knowledge of the Scripture said: “I will bring it to you within the twinkling of an eye!] The Qur’aan commentators stated that he was man – a scholar and righteous in the presence of Sulyamaan, and he was called Aaif Ibn Barkhiyaa. He knew Allaah’s Greatest Name through which Allaah responds and gives when invoked and asked.

Allah said that he said: [أَنَا۟ ءَاتِيكَ بِهِۦ قَبۡلَ أَن يَرۡتَدَّ إِلَيۡكَ طَرۡفُكَ‌ۚ – I will bring it to you within the twinkling of an eye!]- Meaning, by invoking Allah with that Name. And Allah knows best as to whether this is what is intended or that this person had knowledge of the scripture through which he was able to bring something that was far away and attain what was very difficult to attain (by the will of Allah).

Sulyamaan’s Reaction When He Saw The Throne of Bilqees In His Presence

Allah [The Exalted] said:

Then when he (Sulayman) saw it (Bilqees’s Throne) placed before him, he said: “This is by the Grace of my Lord to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful! And whoever is grateful, truly, his gratitude is for (the good of) his ownself, and whoever is ungrateful, (he is ungrateful only for the loss of his ownself). Certainly! My Lord is Rich (Free of all wants), Bountiful]. [فَلَمَّا رَءَاهُ مُسۡتَقِرًّا عِندَهُ – Then when he (Sulayman) saw it (Bilqees’s Throne) placed before him], he praised Allaah [The Exalted] for ability placed at his disposal, his kingdom and the affairs facilitated for him. Then he said: [هَـٰذَا مِن فَضۡلِ رَبِّى لِيَبۡلُوَنِىٓ ءَأَشۡكُرُ أَمۡ أَكۡفُرُ‌ۖ – This is by the Grace of my Lord to test me whether I am grateful or ungrateful!]- Meaning, to test me by way of of it. He was not beguiled kingdom, authority and power as is the habit of the ignorant kings (See footnote f); rather he knew that this was a test from his Lord, so he was scared of not being thankful for these blessings.

Then he clarified that being grateful to Allah does not benefit Allah; rather its benefits returns to the grateful one; so he said: [وَمَن شَكَرَ فَإِنَّمَا يَشۡكُرُ لِنَفۡسِهِۦ‌ۖ وَمَن كَفَرَ فَإِنَّ رَبِّى غَنِىٌّ۬ كَرِيمٌ۬- and whoever is ungrateful, (he is ungrateful only for the loss of his ownself). Certainly! My Lord is Rich (Free of all wants), Bountiful]- Meaning, Allah is not in need of a person’s deeds, and He is generous, bestows abundant good that to both a grateful person and an ungrateful person, except that being grateful for the blessings He bestows leads to more blessings and being ungrateful leads to its decrease. [1]

No one will ever possess a kingdom like that of Prophet Sulayman, yet have you noticed how he credited all his achievements to Allah? This stands in sharp contrast to those who rely solely on cause and effect for their successes and failures, often overlooking Allah’s Divine Will and Decree in every situation. Imam As-Sadi, may Allah have mercy upon him, said:

The greatest evils of knowledge and its inconsistencies occurs as a result of acquainting oneself with the creation without its Creator, acquaintance with effects without the One who created those effects, acquaintance with causes without the one who created those causes and acquaintance with the paths without its sound goals. The deficiency in this type of acquaintance is numerous and its harm is great, because indeed many atheists and those deceived by them are skilled in the natural sciences, but they confine themselves to it and are blind regarding its association with its Creator and Causer. And with regards to that which is placed in these natural sciences of wonders and secrets, they see themselves as those who know the wonders of the natural sciences – which none knows besides them – and the secrets which Allāh has placed in nature, so it gives them higher status over others and thus they become afflicted with vanity and self-deception. They confine themselves to it, consider it as the final outcome, the purpose and the goal, and thus occurs great deviation, deficiency in knowledge and intellect. If they knew and affirmed belief in the true Creator and the One Who Controls all the affairs of the Universe- the One who attached the means and causes to His Qadaa Wal Qadr [Footnote a], know that the means and causes are an abode of His Perfect Wisdom – for indeed Allāh [The Most High] is All-Wise, He placed things in their rightful places, gave the subtle affairs and big affairs an amazing orderly system and a firm association; gave everything that is sought after and the goals a means or cause, and a path that will lead to it, and due to this results and outcomes are based on the strength or weakness of the means or causes, and the strength or weakness of the performer of the deed- and then they bound these means, paths and outcomes to Allāh’s Qadaa Wal Qadr, their knowledge would have been perfected and they would have acquired of certainty that which cannot be acquired by those who have not reached their level; but they are glad (and proud) with that which they know of those paths whose tangible worldly outcomes they know and became haughty by way of them, so the statement of Allāh [The Most High] apply to them:

فلما جاءتهم رسلهم بالبينات فرحوا بما عندهم من العلم وحاق بهم ما كانوا به يستهزئون

Then when their Messengers came to them with clear proofs, they were glad (and proud) with that which they had of the knowledge (of worldly things): And that at which they used to mock, surrounded them (i.e. the punishment)]. [Surah Ghaafir. Aayah 83]

Allāh said:

And indeed We had firmly established them with that wherewith We have not established you! And We had assigned them the (faculties of) hearing (ears), seeing (eyes), and hearts, but their hearing (ears), seeing (eyes), and their hearts availed them nothing since they used to deny the Ayat (Allah’s Prophets and their Prophethood, proofs, evidences, verses, signs, revelations, etc.) of Allah, and they were completely encircled by that which they used to mock at! [Surah Al-Ahqaaf. Aayah 26]

This is the greatest evil consequence of self-amazement and arrogance without exception, and the most perilous path through which many people become beguiled and deceived; therefore we ask Allāh to blessed us with sound knowledge that is supported by sound intellect, divine text and sound natural disposition – the beneficial knowledge which the servant knows in all its aspects, and the knowledge which links the subsidiary affairs to its (sound) fundamental principles, and its means, causes, effects and outcomes are ascribed to the One Who originated and created them. It is the knowledge whose possessor does not disassociate the creation from its Creator- neither disassociates its effects from the One Who made them effective, nor disassociates the wisdom, the secrets and the amazing orderly systems in the creation from the One Who Created and Perfected them, organised them in perfect order and brought them into existence prior to their non-existence. This is the knowledge that bears the fruits of certainty and through which tranquility is obtained, and through which happiness and success is attained. It bears the fruits of beautiful manners and righteous deeds, beneficial to the religious and worldly affairs. [2]

We ask Allah:

Reflections on some statements of Al-Allamah Rabee Bin Hadi Al-Madkhali [72 of 80]

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

The purification of the companions and their upbringing through this Quran is what changed all the corruptions of the pre-Islamic era of ignorance within them, and purifying their souls with a lofty purification. It is what led to the most profound religious and social transformation in history. All this was achieved through profuse recitation of the Quran during prayers and outside of them, and reflecting on it.

Majmu 4/136

“Regime Change”- Beatified path to death and destruction

In The Name of Allah, The Most Merciful, The Bestower of Mercy.

Allaah [The Most High] said:

وَإِذۡ قَالَ إِبۡرَٲهِـۧمُ رَبِّ ٱجۡعَلۡ هَـٰذَا بَلَدًا ءَامِنً۬ا وَٱرۡزُقۡ أَهۡلَهُ ۥ مِنَ ٱلثَّمَرَٲتِ مَنۡ ءَامَنَ مِنۡہُم بِٱللَّهِ وَٱلۡيَوۡمِ ٱلۡأَخِرِ‌ۖ

And (remember) when Ibrahim (Abraham) said: My Lord, make this city (Makkah) a place of security and provide its people with fruits, such of them as believe in Allah and the Last Day]. [Al-Baqara. 126]

Al-Allamah Salih Al-Fawzan, may Allaah protect him, said:

He (Ibrahim – peace be upon him) prioritized security in his supplication over the pursuit of sustenance because security is an essential requirement. Without security, individuals cannot truly enjoy sustenance, as fear undermines the ability to attain it. This is precisely what adversaries aim for—those who seek to destabilise Muslim societies. They wish to create division among Muslims and weaken their unity behind their leaders. This is what they desire – in the guise of promoting beneficial outcomes, rectification, and the alleviation of oppression. They do not desire good advice for the Muslims.

This is all false pretenses, as the absence of rulership would lead to widespread chaos, the proliferation of corruption, and the failure of the promised benefits. Corruption would become rampant, and rectification would be unattainable. Consequently, it is imperative for Muslims to unite under a leadership structure. Even if such leadership exhibits flaws and negligence, the populace should practice patience, as this patience serves to avert greater harm and adversity. Shaikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: “It is not known of a group that has ever risen against their Muslim ruler without their circumstances deteriorating further after his removal.” This observation is evident in contemporary times. What is the situation of the countries where the rulers and heads of state have been removed? There has not ceased to be fear, anxiety, chaos, and bloodshed etc. [1]

This underscores the significance of safety as a fundamental necessity for individuals. Otherwise, Ibrahim, peace be upon him, would not have persistently sought Allah’s assistance in establishing it in this land. Consider the regions where a system that ensures safety has deteriorated. In such places, the populace struggles to manage their daily affairs; schools and markets remain closed, and individuals are confined to their homes. Those who have the means often seek to escape to safer locations. When inquiring with one of them, it becomes evident that they feel unable to coexist with their community and family in an environment devoid of safety.

Security can only be effectively established through two key principles: the implementation of Allah’s Laws and obedience to the rulers. The Messenger, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, elucidated this essential matter for Muslims in their lives. Irbad Sariyah, may Allah be pleased with him, reported that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, delivered an admonition after the morning prayer—an admonition that instilled fear in our hearts and brought tears to our eyes. A man then asked, ‘Is this a farewell sermon, and what counsel do you offer us?’ He replied, ‘I enjoin on you to fear Allah and to listen and obey, even if an Abyssinian slave is appointed as your ruler. Indeed, those among you who live long enough will witness many differences. Therefore, be cautious of newly introduced matters in the religion, for they lead to misguidance. Whoever among you observes such occurrences is obliged to adhere to my Sunnah and the Sunnah of the rightly guided caliphs, holding firmly to it with your molar teeth.'” [Ahmad 3/126]

This hadith lays the foundations for security within Islam, which consists of two primary components. The first is fear of Allah (The Most High), understood in its fullest and most comprehensive sense. The second component is the adherence to the rulers in matters that are just and beneficial. The fear of Allah fosters a Muslim’s relationship with Allah, their neighbours, and the surrounding environment. Conversely, the absence of Allah’s Shariah leads to chaos and moral decay. Indeed, Allah (The Mighty and Majestic) has issued a warning to those who forsake His Shariah and disobey His Messenger. Allah said:

And Allah puts forward the example of a township (Makkah), that dwelt secure and well content; its provision coming to it in abundance from every place, but it (its people) denied the Favours of Allah (with ungratefulness). So Allah made it taste the extreme of hunger (famine) and fear, because of that (evil, i.e. denying Prophet Muhammad) which they (its people) used to do. [Al-Nahl. 112]

Listening to and obeying the rulers in a (positive manner) ensures that an individual’s affairs within society remain orderly. This act of compliance is intrinsically linked to fear of Allah. Al-Hasan Al-Basri, may Allah have mercy upon him, said: “Indeed, Al-Hajjaaj is a manifestation of Allah’s punishment; therefore, do not attempt to counteract Allah’s punishment with your own hands. Instead, it is essential to submit and exhibit humility, as Allah, the Most High, has stated:

[وَلَقَدْ أَخَذْنَاهُم بِالْعَذَابِ فَمَا اسْتَكَانُوا لِرَبِّهِمْ وَمَا يَتَضَرَّعُونَ – And Indeed We seized them with punishment, but they humbled not themselves to their Lord, nor did they invoke (Allaah) with submission to Him]. [Al-Muminun. 76]

You see a person who possesses a true understanding of security and his awareness is increased through fear of Allah, thus, he is eager to obey the rulers. However, when there is a lapse in their piety, their sense of security may diminish. Once fear of Allah is established, they they will attain the promise that Allah has mentioned (as follows):

Allah has promised those among you who believe, and do righteous good deeds, that He will certainly grant them succession to (the present rulers) in the earth, as He granted it to those before them, and that He will grant them the authority to practise their religion, that which He has chosen for them (i.e. Islam). And He will surely give them in exchange a safe security after their fear (provided) they (believers) worship Me and do not associate anything (in worship) with Me. But whoever disbelieved after this, they are the Fasiqun (rebellious, disobedient to Allah). [Al-Nur 55]

The lack of obedience to the ruler and prioritizing personal interests over that of the ruler is among the most significant factors leading to the corruption of both the land and its inhabitants, as well as a deviation from the path of righteousness and guidance. Al Hasan Al Basri, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated, “By Allah! The establishment of religion is only possible through rulers—despite their potential for tyranny and oppression—because they rectify numerous matters through their governance that outweigh the corruption they may cause.” Imam Ibn Rajab, may Allah have mercy upon him, stated, “The worldly life holds significant benefits when rulers are followed. Through this obedience, the essential matters concerning the sustenance of the populace are established, enabling them to utilize these means as support in demonstrating their faith and fulfilling their obligations to their Lord.” Read: http://www.abukhadeejah.com/the-tyranny-of-the-rulers-a-reason-for-rebellion/

Disregarding the authority of rulers and prioritizing oneself through conflict or other means equates to defying Allah and His Messenger, as well as opposing the principles upheld by Ahlus Sunnah Wal Jamaa’ah, the righteous predecessors. The maintenance of security fosters unity and cooperation among Muslims. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, stated:

إِنَّمَا الْمُؤْمِنُونَ إِخْوَةٌ فَأَصْلِحُوا بَيْنَ أَخَوَيْكُمْ ۚ وَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ لَعَلَّكُمْ تُرْحَمُونَ

The believers are nothing else than brothers (in Islamic religion). So, make reconciliation between your brothers, and fear Allah, that you may receive mercy. [Al-Hujurat. 10]

Allah, The Most High, said:

The believers, men and women, are Auliya’ (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another, they enjoin (on the people) Al-Ma’ruf, and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar; they perform As-Salat and give the Zakat, and obey Allah and His Messenger. Allah will have His Mercy on them. Surely Allah is All-Mighty, All-Wise. [at-Tawbah 71]

Iman is neither a matter of wishful thinking or superficial assertions; it is a conviction that resides in the heart, evidenced by one’s actions. A true believer cannot be considered as such until he desires for his Muslim brother what he desires for himself and interacts with others in a manner he wishes to be treated. It is universally acknowledged that security is a fundamental aspiration for all; thus, it is incumbent upon a Muslim to actively seek the security of others in order to attain security and safety for himself. Furthermore, maintaining security within a community requires the fulfillment of trusts, while creating an atmosphere of insecurity equates to betrayal. Allah, the Most High, has stated:

O you who believe! Betray not Allah and His Messenger, nor betray knowingly your Amanat (things entrusted to you, and all the duties which Allah has ordained for you). And know that your possessions and your children are but a trial and that surely with Allah is a mighty reward. O you who believe! If you obey and fear Allah, He will grant you Furqan a criterion [(to judge between right and wrong), or (Makhraj, i.e. making a way for you to get out from every difficulty)], and will expiate for you your sins, and forgive you, and Allah is the Owner of the Great Bounty. [Al-Anfal. 27-29]

Shaikh Al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah, may Allah have mercy upon him, said, “They [i.e. Ahlus Sunnah] know that Allah sent Muhammad, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, for the benefit of the creation in this life and the next, and Allah commands rectification and not corruption”. (2)
